Monroe is scenic historic town with a Swiss flavor, and makes a nice trip from the anywhere in the southern Wisconsin - northern Illinois area - Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, or Rockford.

Biking and hiking trails - the Badger Trail - http://www.badger-trail.com - is right down the road from us, a walking and bicycle trail, runs from Verona to the Illinois state line, to connect to the Jane Addams trail - http://www.janeaddamstrail.com - which continues to Freeport. It's a beautiful route, and is wider than the Sugar River Trail - http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/parks/specific/sugarriver - which is not far from us either.
Or maybe you're more into wheels with an engine! Then you'll want the link to the Cheese Country Trail - http://www.tricountytrails.com - for ATV's instead.
In the winter, both the Badger Trail and the Cheese Country Trail have good snowmobiling.
