antique 1880s Spode china miniature candle stick, hand painted Whinchat bird
more photos of this product belowHand painted and marked Spode china candle holder, a tiny candlestick just 2 1/2" overall diameter. The mark is from the 19th century, mid-Victorian, I believe.
The design is a whinchat, a small thrush bird. It's amazingly detailed, as is the gold trim. I haven't been able to find any information about this Spode pattern, though I believe it was factory painted as the Whinchat - SPODE are in the same red color.
There's some soil or old wax inside, where the candle would have fit. No chips or cracks, paint looks very good without wear. A lovely little piece.
