antique broad ax forged iron hewing ax primitive farm or rustic cabin wood chopping tool
more photos of this product belowLarge primitive antique hewing axe with a rusty iron head. It measures about 26" long overall and the head measures about 11" x 9".
The ax head is beveled to one side like a wood chisel for smoothing planks and squaring logs into beams for post and beam construction.
The ax handle is also bent to offset the head. This is uncommon to see now, but it protects the user from scraping their knuckles when swinging the ax close to the wood.
The handle is weathered and worn and there are a couple of chips to the cutting edge.
