old antique polished wood tool case or camera / scientific instrument box

Beautiful old walnut wood box with french polish finish and brass hardware (no key). The box measures 12 1/2" x 9 3/4" x 5 1/4" over the exterior.

This is empty now, but looks to us as though it once held a piece of scientific equipment or possibly a camera? "Indicators' was scratched onto it at some point, please see photos.

Both the exterior and interior of the box are much worn and scratched, with wear to the velvet lining. It's a beautiful piece still, with a wonderful Victorian era steampunk style!
