antique cast iron letter S, counter weight for clock or vintage mechanical tool or equipment?

We love this old cast iron 'S', it's like a small heavy charm or tag, about 1 1/2" in diameter. We have no idea what it's for! But it's double sided, with a hanging loop at the top. And would doubtless be great for something if your letter is S!
