tiny old brass bowl w/ lid, vintage snuff box or sand pot for writing desk?

Unmarked solid brass pot with lid, about 2 3/4" overall diameter, 3 1/2" tall. Maybe a snuff box? Maybe a desk box to hold sand? I have no idea as to the exact age or origins of this piece, and it has no stamps or hallmarks that I could find.
