Beautiful old cotton whites, with an interesting hand-written note "Mrs. Martha McDonalds wedding night gown and apron - handmade". The bride was the grandmother of an lady in her 80s today.
The long cotton apron has a full gathered skirt which ties at the waist. It's edged in wide knitted cotton lace, and hand-embroidered with a thistle pattern in ecru on the small pocket and along the side of the skirt. It measures 18" across skirt front, with long cotton ties beyond that. It's 36" long from waist to lower edge on the lace trimming at the hem.
The nightgown is very modest, sturdy white cotton with machine made lace trim and more hand embroidery, this time a floral design in lavender cotton thread. It's 17" across the back of the shoulders, up to 44" at the bust, 51" long from shoulder to hem. It's missing one button, and looks very good overall, carefully kept (as was the apron), just a little brown foxing to both pieces.
