vintage hand painted Japan china windmill hat pin holder, Ardalt Lenwile label
more photos of this product below'Working' windmill, hand painted china, made in Japan. This has a removable lid with two long holes on the underside, and a number of round holes on the top. My best guess is a hatpin holder - I don't know why the top was made in this way, but it's the only thing I can think of that would work in these holes.
It's painted black with gold trim, classical scene miniature on the base. Jar is about 4 1/4" tall overall. Windmill blade is also china, and is mounted to be able to spin. It's nothing short of amazing that this piece has managed to survive intact and unbroken over the last 70 odd years!
