1800s vintage primitive antique tied quilts home dyed cotton & civil war era calico print
more photos of this product belowLot of three, very old, very heavy, very primitive tied quilts out of a farm estate here in Wisconsin. These might well be the oldest quilts I've ever had - they were with a number of other old textiles are are from the 1860s according to the note in the box with them.
Two of these measure about 54" x 82", and are home dyed cotton in a brown color, tied with cotton warp thread of the type used to set up a loom. One is store bought calico print, covering a quilt about 70" x 84". Also tied with cotton warp.
These are very heavy, made over cotton battings, I think. The colors are faded unevenly and the 'chinners' sewn over the top edge of the quilts are frayed, split and discolored.
Aside from that, these look pretty good. There's a few rips or holes, or unstitched seams, also a few mended patches. They do have a few spots, but no odors.
Not bad at all really for pieces of this age, the fabric looks strong yet though I wouldn't want to run them though the washer!
