WWI soldiers vintage patriotic US flag tinted embroidery from the Girls they Left Behind

Unusual piece of tinted embroidery with US soldiers World War I vintage, From the Girls they Left Behind. This was completely stitched, but never framed or made up into a pillow. (Wondering, as the girls must have - what would a soldier in training camp or on the front do with a toss cushion?!)

Still, a pretty picture, sweetly sentimental. It's in very good condition at over 100 years old, just a few small spots. Measures about 19 1/2" x 16" over the unfinished edges of the cotton backing fabric.
