antique homespun hand woven coverlet remnant dated 1842, Pennsylvania style Frane Hill
more photos of this product belowLargish piece of a linen / wool homespun woven bed cover, with name and date (1842). When I first saw this I guessed that Frane Hill was a township or village, and that the POT was the initials of the bride this was made for, or perhaps the weaver.
But I can't find ANYPLACE named Frane Hill on the entire internet, so now I think Frane Hill is the person for which the coverlet was made, and POT is the weaver, as the only POT I could think of was Potsdam New York, not a common area for old Pennsylvania settlers. Now I can't find any known weavers signing as POT. This is something of a mystery piece to me!
This piece measures 15" x 38" overall, looks very good, strong and supple, not a tremendous amount of fading. It looks lovely on my farmhouse table just as it is as a runner, or would be great in a yard long frame.
Please email me if you know anything at all about the history of this piece - I'm very interested in these old Pennsylvania style covers! A Red Lion girl here :)
