hand painted rosemaling wood wall box, Scandinavian folk art rustic Swedish country style

Hand painted wooden wall box out of a farm estate here in Wisconsin. This is 20th century vintage, made in a traditional style with rosemaled design.

I'm not certain of the original purpose of this piece - it's pretty big (larger than a salt box, about 11 1/2" tall overall). Box has a hole drilled in the bottom, not sure why? I would have thought a number of holes would have made more sense for something like a box for onions?

It's a little worn as you'd expect, but the paint looks good and it's quite sturdy. Displays very nicely just as it is!
