primitive rough old wood wall rack, spoon or knife holder, salt box?

Very rough and rustic wooden box... we think this was made as a wall box, to stand as shown in the first photo, but it has no hanger, or hole for hanging, so maybe it was designed to stand on a table or work bench? It measures 13" long end to end, 10" long over the box area, 4 1/4" deep (out from the wall).
