solid brass Chinese puzzle lock, small padlock size

I was told this piece is a Chinese puzzle lock - it's solid brass, and has a faint etched design on one side. I don't know anything about this piece, in fact I haven't even been able to figure out how to open and close it! Not sure of the age, or if Chinese puzzle locks are actually made in China. A mysterious and interesting little piece.
