old coiled grass basket, Eskimo or Indian basket? vintage sewing box

Vintage sewing basket, a grass Indian basket? This has a lovely coiled scroll decoration which we love, but we know very little about old baskets, and almost nothing at all about this one. It's 10 1/2" x 5" x 6", in good condition overall. There's no breaks to box or cover, though there's just a fragment remaining for a hinge, and the lid is entirely separate from the box.
