early 1900s vintage hand tool, barrel bung drill, tapered reamer borer auger

I was told that this old hand auger was once used for drilling the holes in wood barrels, or else used to put chair legs together. Might be either, or both! I just don't know. It's in good solid condition yet, though the painted finish is worn.
