1920s vintage cast iron round w/ sailing ship, ornamental radio cover or fireplace screen

Antique cast iron round with small feet, nautical style with a ship in full sail. Opinions seem to be mixed as to what this piece is / does - a fireplace screen, or a screen for the speaker of an early radio?

I'm inclined to believe the latter, but really - hardly anyone has either radios OR fireplaces, so it's probably just a fantastic old cast iron ornament for the coastal style or that old New England look. Great weathered original black and gold finish, and heavy enough to use as a door stop! Measures 15 1/2" tall.
