Esco dog shar pei or bulldog, large statue chalkware or cement figure vintage 1980

Beautiful soulful eyed dog statue from Esco, 1980. Not sure if this is a bulldog or shar pei?

He's about 9" long, very heavy. I thought this looks like a cement material, but I believe Esco makes mostly chalkware, so maybe it's some sort of cast plaster? There's a few chips, but nothing that looks like chalkware to me.

He'll be happy to guard your door as a door stop, or lie on your desk as a paperweight, or be a memorial for a loved dog.
